Preface:
In response to a recent request from The Naval Association of Canada, I contributed the following article for one of their publications. Since there is a diplomatic-naval theme throughout this piece, I thought that it might be of interest to some of the JustOttawa readership.

Introduction:

First off … full disclosure and brief background!I have absolutely no naval service experience. I was asoldier; agrunt, dog face, ground pounder or whatever. My uniform was a khaki colour, not navy blue.

As a member of the Regular Officer’s Training Program(ROTP)from 1960-65, I attended McGill Universityand Royal Military College. After graduation, the following four years in the army were exciting and includedtraining as apara-trooper and jumping out of “perfectly serviceable” Royal Canadian Air Force aircraft plus a year of duty in the Gaza Strip(cut a bit short by the Six Day War in 1967).

A few years ago, following retirement from the Foreign Service, I renewed my pilot’s license after a ‘short’ interruption of a few decades. Since then, I have flown (out of Ottawa/Rockcliffe) mainly in the eastern ON region. However, I have completed a couple of single engine, long haul flights from the nation’s capital (to Victoria/Seattle and to Florida).

Accommodation For Seniors

When I volunteered to write an article on accommodation for seniors in the Ottawa region I began with the vivid memory of my sister, brother and me attempting to find suitable accommodation for our father in the Montreal area. This happened a few years ago when, at 88 years young, it was time for our dad to move from his apartment to a seniors’ residence. Quite frankly, it was a challenging and frustrating task. Amongst other things, we had trouble finding the appropriate material so that we could properly identify the options.
